Sleep Study
About a week ago, I had a sleep study done at the hospital. The reason for the study was my extreme and chronic fatigue that I had been experiencing for the last six (6) months or so. My fatigue had deteriorated slowly but constant, and I was at a point where something had to be done or I would literally go crazy due to lack of sleep. I never felt rested, always extremely tired, and irritable. My doctor took lab test after lab test without finding a valid reason for my fatigue. My health started to really take a turn for the worse and my fatigue followed by joint pain, and a feeling of having the flu all the time. Since my doctor couldn’t find anything wrong with regular tests he decided to do a sleep study survey. The survey showed that I would be a good candidate for a sleep study; said and done, we scheduled one for the following night.
I arrived at the hospital late at night and it took about an hour (!) to get hook up all the wires, microphones, and the EKG. They actually used glue to put the electrodes on my head and I was told that it could be removed by – get this – nail polish remover…. When they finished the preparations, I wondered to myself how I would be able to even fall asleep with so many things all over my body, in my hair, on my neck, on my legs, on my chest…and on…and on. I was so tired at this point (as I was all the time anyways) but decided to go to bed and try to get some sleep. This was about midnight. It actually didn’t take very long since I was there b3cuase of my fatigue and constant need for sleep….which was a good thing I assume. However; as always I woke up about six (6) times and felt incredible heavy and in so much pain that I couldn’t move…well, at about six (6) am, I woke up again and just thought that I was ready to call it quits. I buzzed for the nurse and she walks in stating that I was their first patient waking up for the day (funny since I normally would wake at about five (5) am in the morning). I felt exhausted and couldn’t wait to go home….it took quite a while to get the electrodes out of my hair since they had to use nail polish remover…
All in all, it was worth it since the results came back stating why I feel so fatigue and exhausted all the time. It seems as if I have Impaired Rapid Eye Movement during my sleep. This means that I never reach a deep restorative stage of sleep and awakens frequently and never feel rested. I got the correct medication and last night I had the best night of sleep I have had in months…and I was in such a good mood it was almost ridiculous. Now I am off to bed for the night and can’t wait to have another night of wonderfully pleasant sleep!!! Good night to you all and sweet dreams.
